Wagging Tales Virtual Story Time provides an opportunity for elementary students to participate in a humane education program while practicing their reading skills.

At Virtual Story Time each week, students receive an informal lesson about animals from the MDSPCA’s Senior Outreach Coordinator. After this group opportunity, students read aloud in breakout rooms with one or two animals and their volunteers.

The Maryland SPCA is looking for a virtual volunteer to join us weekly as the “producer” of Virtual Story Time on Thursday afternoons January-May. The producer will assist our Senior Education Coordinator by performing the essential duties that keep this running smoothly for volunteers, pets, and students.

Essential Duties

As this is an entirely virtual role, the volunteer must be comfortable with and able to access a computer reliably and have a stable internet connection. The volunteer should be comfortable using Zoom, and be able to download the latest version of Zoom. The producer will create breakout rooms each week to pair volunteer pets and humans with students.

  • The producer will send a ‘broadcast’ reminder when there are 5 minutes and 1 minute left.
  • The producer will offer basic technical support to volunteers and participants, this may include reminding participants to mute, helping volunteers change their names on Zoom, and answering basic questions in the chat.

Virtual Story Time is held once a week on Thursday afternoons. The producer must log on and be available from 3:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. eastern time.

Volunteers will be trained in how to do this role via a Zoom session, and written instructions will be provided.

Other Details

The volunteer for this role does not need to live in Maryland – in fact, we welcome volunteers from outside the United States. This role offers volunteers the opportunity to gain experience in animal welfare, literacy, and humane education. A love of learning, appreciation for books, strong communication skills, and patience are essential for volunteers in this role.
