The Maryland SPCA and Kids-4-K9s, Incorporated are once again teaming up to deliver a multi-tiered service-learning opportunity for Baltimore teens. The program is designed specifically for students ages 14-17, with an interest in learning about animal welfare and playing an active role in preventing animal abuse, cruelty and neglect.
The Teen Internship Program is an important part of the Maryland SPCA mission of improving the lives of pets and people in the community. While earning service credit, students work in partnership with program staff and other volunteers to provide positive activities for the dogs at the shelter while teaching the dogs to offer more human-appealing behaviors - a vital part of helping them get adopted and be successful in their new home. At the same time, students learn firsthand the important role training also plays in providing enrichment for the dogs and how it can help to reduce the stress associated with living in the shelter environment.
Students will spend about half of their time in fun interactive lessons learning about how to use positive reinforcement to teach and change behavior. Students will spend the remaining time working directly with shelter dogs, assisted by program leaders and experienced volunteers and time at the end of each session reflecting on the day’s events and/or working on group projects such as creating educational materials or enrichment items for the animals. The program will be offered during three separate sessions:
SESSION 1: July 24 - July 28, 2017
SESSION 2: July 31 - August 4, 2017
SESSION 3: August 7 - August 12, 2017
Each session runs Monday through Friday (5 days); 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Students receive 20 hours service credit for each session.
The Teen Summer Internship Program has very limited space, as such we can only accept 30 participants into the summer program (10 participants into each of the three summer sessions). Those accepted into the program are expected to complete the program session in its entirety.
