Guidelines for Interactions Between Children and Animals

Have you decided to expand your family with a new furry friend? Here are some steps you can take to ensure a happy relationship between your animal and child.

Always supervise young children around animals. This includes your children as well as neighbors, family, and friends.

Do make sure your dog has basic obedience training. The dog needs to know what is expected of him, and you need to establish a form of communication with your pet.

Do explain to your child that since dogs and cats can't talk like we do, they communicate in different ways such as facial expressions, body posture, hissing, and barking. Your child should learn to be sensitive to the animal’s behavior.

Have your child ask you first if he or she can play with the animal. Teach your child not to disturb an animal that is resting or sleeping, eating a meal, or playing with/chewing on a favorite toy or object.

Teach your child not to pursue a pet that runs away.

Demonstrate how to interact with the animal. Show the child how to pet the animal nicely, to give the animal some space if he gets anxious, and not to pull the animal’s tail or ears. Carefully explain that an animal is not a toy.

Remember that children learn the most from your example. Don't force responsibility on the child that he or she can’t handle. The animal will suffer the consequences of being neglected, ignored, and not properly cared for. Ultimately, taking care of another life is an adult’s responsibility.

If the animal shows any aggressive behavior, do not wait to see if it gets worse. Contact a behavior specialist or veterinarian immediately.
