When you adopt a cat from the Maryland SPCA, there are many responsibilities and lifestyle adjustments to consider. We provide you with a reference packet after you adopt, but below are some general points to keep in mind while making your decision to adopt.
All cats require a veterinary exam, as well as a series of vaccinations, and some cats need regular grooming. The Maryland SPCA provides one month of pet health insurance for $1 thanks to a donation by Petfinder.com.
Your home and yard should provide proper confinement and reasonable space for the size of your cats. You should only allow your cats outside if they are under your control and supervision. Cats can enjoy a happy, satisfying life indoors.
New pets should be closely supervised when with other pets and children while they become familiar with their new home.
We suggest a high-quality cat food that should be eaten in moderation. Your vet can provide specific diet recommendations. Cats should have both wet and dry food options in separate bowls. They can be picky eaters and don’t tend to like their food mixed.
Cats can be testy regarding their litter. Start with basic clay and see how it goes. There should be one box per cat plus one always available to them. Please review the PetsIncredible DVD we provide FREE with every adoption for tips and advice.
Cats need exercise, so play with them. Provide stimulation like window perches, climbing toys, etc. If your cat is scratching furniture, there are options, like SoftPaws and nail trimming. Declawing is a painful procedure and best avoided. The Maryland SPCA has a behaviorist on staff to answer difficult questions.
You must have identification (ID) on your cat at all times. We strongly recommend ID stay attached to a breakaway collar worn by your cat at all times.
We hope every adoption is permanent. However, if you experience problems with your new pet that cannot be corrected, please contact us.
